FAQ

Are any vaccinations necessary?

If you have recently visited some countries in Africa or South America where there is risk for yellow fever transmission Indian authorities require proof of vaccination certification to enter the country.  Otherwise there are no mandatory vaccinations for India.  Many Western authorities recommend protection for Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio, Hepatitis A and Typhoid.

Kerala is not known as an area for malaria.  During our 20 years’ of clinical activity we are not aware of any case of malaria in Kovalam or its surroundings.  Please consult your GP for further details and advice.

What is the climate like during winter/ summer/ monsoon?

Kovalam climate is tropical in nature and pleasant all through the year due to its vicinity to the sea with temperatures rarely much more than 30 degrees or lower than 20. During the winter months (November to February) the temperature goes slightly down. During the summer (April to May) the days are quite warm. But the sea breeze soothes and refreshes. During monsoon which begins in June with heavy rainfalls most days until July and sometimes also in October. In August and September the weather tends to be dry.

Is it possible to swim in the see all year round?

The best time of the year to swim in the sea is between November and March. As currents of the Indian Ocean are very turbulent it is not always possible to swim in the sea – especially during monsoon period.

Do I need a visa to enter India?

Unless you are an Indian citizen or registered NRI you need a visa in addition to a valid passport and return flight tickets for admission to Indian territory.  Citizens from some countries are allowed to enter with an e-Visa for a short-term visa which is registered upon arrival to certain Indian airport.  This the cheapest visa process and requires an online application before you travel.  You need to do that at least 5 days ahead of your departure.  Please note the you also need to bring a paper copy of your approved e-visa and show it to the customs.

You can find out what rules apply to your country of origin via your local Indian embassy or appointed visa agency.  Or simply ask your travel agent for support.

When is the best time to visit the Clinic?

Most people choose to visit during high season in the months between November and February. A common misconception is that it is very hot in Kerala during the European summer period. Actually, the months of August and September tend to be very pleasant with temperatures in the mid to high 20’s during daytime and low 20s night-time. According to the tradition this is also the most effective time of the year for treatments.

What kind of clothing do you advise?

Relaxed, loose-fitting clothes in cotton is sufficient most days and nights.

What currencies do you accept? Which credit cards do you accept?

We accept most currencies based on current exchange rates from our Indian bank and we accept all major international credit cards.

How do I get to Kovalam and how long does it take?

Travel time for the journey varies depending on your flight schedule.  If you are travelling from Europe, it takes approximately 10 hours effective flying time to reach Trivandrum (with the local name Thiruvananthapuram) airport.  There are currently no chartered flights available to this destination.  Airline companies or from the Middle East offer flights with one or more stops.  Other airline companies offer flights with two or more stops.

From the Trivandrum airport there is a 30 minutes transfer by car to reach Kovalam.  We can arrange pickup at the airport for an extra fee.  Otherwise there are prepaid taxi services available at the arrival terminal.
